EMRIP Side-Event: The challenges of the implementation of the Free, Prior and Informed Consent in the Russian Federation

The run on raw materials such as copper, nickel, oil and natural gas is destroying the habitat of indigenous communities worldwide. The concept of “Free, Prior and Informed Consent” (FPIC) protects the right of self-determination of indigenous communities. In countries with severe repression and limited freedom of expression, such as Russia, advocacy for land rights carries great dangers. In the face of Russian repression during the Ukraine war, advocating for indigenous voice and environmental protection in economic projects has now become life-threatening. On the podium, indigenous representatives report on their commitment to self-determination rights vis-à-vis companies. They discuss to what extent FPIC can still be implemented in the current political situation in Russia.

We cordially invite you to the online side event during this year’s session of the UN Expert Mechanism on Indigenous Peoples (EMRIP), organized by the exile organization “International Committee of Indigenous Peoples of Russia” and the Society for Threatened Peoples.
